Category 7 - Best Technology

7e. Best Technology Product or Solution for Safeguarding and Empowering Customers

This category is awarded for the best use of technology that enables users of mobile services to safeguard the privacy and security of their data on their mobile devices, or enables mobile operators and service providers to effectively manage and protect networks and their customers.

As the mobile services eco-system expands and diversifies at an increasing pace, it is becoming increasingly difficult for mobile users to understand how best to protect and manage their privacy and the security of their data.

This award will be made to the best use of technology that enables mobile users to ensure that their personal data (including their identity, passwords, account balances etc.) are used in ways they expect and are kept secure. This award will also consider technologies which allow users to personalise their mobile services, for example by allowing them to screen unwanted and malicious calls, messages and content as well as to manage their privacy settings when using data services (such as web browsing) or when visiting social network sites. Other examples include interactive privacy controls, privacy icons and nudges – enabling users to make informed choices about how their personal information (e.g. their location) is accessed and used by third parties.

This award will also consider solutions that enable service providers to better protect networks against unauthorised access and fraudulent use of their services. Other examples, of measures could include:

  • Protection for vulnerable groups from inappropriate and malicious content or helping them manage their privacy on social network sites
  • Tools that enable users to protect their hardware and ensure the integrity of their equipment and devices
  • Protection to operators against unauthorised access of their networks and Denial of Service Attacks
  • Measures offering protection to customers against illegal eavesdropping and unauthorised interception of traffic or sensitive data
  • Antivirus, firewalls and malware protection on mobile handsets, tablets and other devices

The judges will shortlist five entries in this category, with one winner announced at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on Tuesday 28th February 2012.
