Green energy has become far more than just a question of good corporate responsibility for the world's mobile networks. As many expand far beyond the reach of power grids they need to find alternatives to diesel, likewise many operators seek to maximise operating costs through the deployment of more energy efficient networks.
The 'Green Network' Award aims to recognise mobile network operators that are focused on the reduction of environmental impacts through use of transformational environment strategies - both alternative or renewable energy sources and the employment of energy efficient base solutions in their network. Specifically this could include the powering of cellular base stations using alternate energy sources, such as wind, solar or biofuels/biomass fuel cells or the introduction of sustainable technology such as base station features with energy saving, waste or CO2 emission reduction features.
The judges will shortlist four to six entries in this category, with one winner announced at the world’s leading mobile communications event, the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on Tuesday 16th February 2010.
The entered programme, product or initiative must have been launched or available in at least one market prior to the deadline for the closing of the awards, Monday 23rd November 23rd 2009.
This award is open to mobile network operators only, that are deploying green networks that support the GSM family of mobile technologies e.g. GSM, GPRS, EDGE, W-CDMA and HSPA.
The judges will look for evidence of pro-activity and tangible progress in terms of eco-friendly green power implementation. Successful companies will be able to demonstrate well conceived, designed and successfully implemented environmentally friendly approaches that deliver tangible, quantifiable results. They will be looking for entries that show genuine efforts toward environmentally sustainable business and ecologically friendly technologies, where entrants should be able to demonstrate:
