About this category

Combine the services of a mobile phone with television content and MobileTV represents a major step to providing live television broadcast and video on demand services for consumers, mobile operators and content providers, alongside other mobile applications and services.

Sports; news, cult dramas, soap operas; popular music; and user generated services delivered through Mobile TV services in a variety of different ways and using a variety of different technologies around the world today are beginning to take off.

Mobile TV allows viewers to enjoy personalized, interactive TV with content specifically adapted to the mobile medium. Trends are emerging with more than 120 plus commercially launched services already today that show the key to delivering a compelling user experience is a mix of familiar linear TV programmes plus on demand and innovative, made for mobile content.

This category aims to highlight developments from the world of MobileTV, showcasing the benefits of various nascent new technologies, from services delivered over 3G and HSPA (MBMS/TDD) Mobile Broadband, to new Mobile TV access technologies, such as Digital Video broadcasting Handheld (DVB-H), Digital Multimedia broadcasting (DMB) and others that are transmitted over, or complement mobile networks.

The judges will shortlist five entries in this category, with one winner announced at the GSMA’s Global Mobile Awards Gala Dinner at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on the evening of Tuesday 17th February 2009.

Eligibility

This category is open to mobile network operators, handset/device manufacturers, television broadcasters, production companies and content /application aggreagators and developers. Trial campaigns to test the concept are welcome as entries, providing they involve more than 1000 user participants, and evidence of campaign effectiveness can be demonstrated.

Judging Criteria

Judges in this category will be looking for a mix of the right ingredients that in their opinion have made, or will make for successful Mobile TV services by providing consumers with an engaging experience. They will be looking for services that:


  • Deliver compelling/engaging content, including known programmes/brands
  • Offer suitable handsets, with hi-resolution screens, picture quality and easy navigation
  • Provide affordable content packages with innovative bundling
  • Make best use of spectrum
  • Are market appealing
  • Are backed by marketing & promotional efforts and campaigns
  • Can demonstrate evidence of user engagement
  • Demonstrate synergies and support for existing mobile eco system

Entry Process

In order to ensure a consistent approach for our judges, entries must be submitted using the Best MobileTV Service entry form. Entries not using the web based entry form will not be considered. All entries must be submitted by November 28th 2008.

An additional upload facility will be provided via a link in your confirmation email once your entry has been submitted. You have the opportunity to upload URLs or multimedia files, these can be either a .jpeg (for pictures), mpeg (for video) formats. You will also have the ability to upload 1 file to accompany your entry up to a maximum file size of 10MB. Other formats will be considered upon request to upload@globalmobileawards.com.

If using sound, entries should be submitted with English language voice-overs or if not possible, they MUST be supported by an English translation of the script

  • Is this a joint entry? If so. Who are the partnering organisations? (100 characters = approx 20 words)
  • Is the entry a trial/pilot or is it a commercially available service? When was it launched? (100 characters = approx 20 words
  • How many active users have you engaged since the service was launched, or the start of the trial? (1000 characters = Approx 170 words)
  • In what ways does it deliver compelling/engaging content for users, and what known TV brands/programmes does it offer? (1000 characters = Approx 170 words)
  • Which handsets do you offer as part of the service? Please provide details of models, including technical specifications, functions and features? (1000 characters = Approx 170 words)
  • In what ways is it simple to use and easy to navigate for users? (1000 characters = Approx 170 words)
  • Please provide full details of cost to connect to the service for user, including details of bundled packages available? (1000 characters = Approx 170 words)
  • How does the service make best use of spectrum available? What synergies are there with the existing mobile eco-system? (1000 characters = Approx 170 words)
  • In summary what makes your service market appealing? What has made/or will make users switch on, and stay tuned? (1000 characters = Approx 170 words)
  • What efforts has your organisation made to market & promote the service, ie what promotional spend has been deployed, and what forms of marketing have been utilised, to what effect? (1000 characters = Approx 170 words)

Please note: Use URLs when they are specific/ relevant to the category and will help judges further understand your entry, but due to the number of entries received, judges will not have time to surf company websites looking for further information on the entered product/service or initiative.
