1a) Best Mobile Game

The Best Mobile Game category is designed to recognise the most innovative, compelling and creative 'published' mobile game available in the world today.

From single player and connected games to location based, casual, educational, 3D and games using the camera, motion sensors or other features, the judges will be looking for a breakthrough in technology and the creation of a new level of experience for gamers on mobile phones.

The judges will shortlist five entries in this category, with one winner announced at the GSMA's Global Mobile Awards Gala Dinner at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on the evening of 17th February 2009.

Eligibility:

The Best Mobile Game category is open to companies and organisations that develop, publish or deliver Mobile Games. Eligible companies include:


  • Mobile Network Operators
  • Games Publishers
  • Gaming Application Developers
  • Content Owners and Providers
  • Device manufacturers
  • Or partnerships between any of the above

Judging criteria:

Mobile games entered should have been published and commercially available on one or more markets between December 1st 2007 and the closing date of the GSMA's Global Mobile Awards (at 5pm (GMT) on 28th November 2008. Please provide evidence to support this such as launch date of the game, including details of countries or regions where the game is available, together with reviews and sales figures.

Entries for the Best Mobile Game will be judged on the following main criteria:


  • The game provides a compelling entertainment experience
  • The game is exciting. Judges will expect to see evidence of sales figures, or if the game is free, advertising income, or number of downloads.
  • It is genuinely innovative, or unique
  • It makes good use of mobility - for example, a multi-player game could be played regardless of the player's (or players') operator
  • 'Cool factor' or appeal of the content delivered
  • Ease of use/simplicity
  • Revenues generated to date
  • Value for money
  • Playing time provided

Entry forms, supporting materials & formats:

In order to ensure a consistent approach for our judges, entries must be submitted using the Category 1a) Best Mobile Game entry form. Entries not using the web based entry form will not be considered. All entries must be submitted by 28th November 2008 (5pm GMT).

In addition to completing the online entry form, it is strongly recommended that entrants submit a demonstration of the entry so that our judges can see and play with it.

You can do this in the following ways:

Provide a website link, or URL of your demo on the entry form or upload a short video of the game. An upload facility will be provided to you via a link in your confirmation email once your entry has been submitted. You will have the ability to upload a maximum of 3 files to accompany your entry up to a maximum file size of 10MB each.

Should you be selected for the shortlist by our judging panel, you may be requested to submit copies of the game for download onto mobile phones.

Specific Entry Form Questions:

On the entry form, in addition to submitting contact and company information, you will be asked to answer the following questions (maximum text/character length for your answers also shown in brackets below):


  • What is the name of your entered mobile game (i.e. the entry)? (100 characters = approx 20 words).
  • Is this a joint entry? If so. Who are the partnering organisations? (500 characters = approx 80 words).
  • Entries for this award category must be commercially available IN AT LEAST ONE market. Please provide evidence to support this such as launch date of service or content, including details of countries/ regions where the game is available and, specifically, which operators or devices offer your game. (500 characters = approx 80 words)
  • Please describe how the game is played i.e. what is it about, what are the objectives? (1500 characters = approx 250 words)
  • What is specifically unique or innovative about your submitted game, such as graphics, characters, effects or technology deployed, for example? (1000 characters = approx 170 words)
  • What is so compelling about the game that makes players want to download, play it, and return to it? (1000 characters = approx 170 words)
  • In what ways does the entry make good use of mobility? For example, could a multi-player game be played regardless of operator? (1000 characters = approx 170 words)
  • How much does it cost to download, what playing time is provided? Why is it good value for money and what makes it simple to use? (1000 characters = approx 170 words)
  • Please provide sales figures, or if the game is free, advertising income or the number of downloads since launch, or on a monthly basis? (1000 characters = approx 170 words)
  • Please provide a URL to your product demo on line, or state whether you wish to upload your demo to our server? (500 characters = approx 80 words)

Please note: Use URLs when they are specific/ relevant to the category and will help judges further understand your entry, but due to the number of entries received, judges will not have time to surf company websites looking for further information on the entered product/service or initiative.
