Best Use of Mobile for Social & Economic Development

This entry is based on creative and innovative programs completed jointly by Bharti Airtel, India's
leading Mobile Carrier, and T9 Predictive Text (now a Nuance Communications product) to drive

globalization: by utilizing mobile phones, Indian society can maintain Hindi and vernacular language
script, and thereby retain traditional linguistic and cultural identity into the 21st century.

The 2009 GSMA Chairman's Award
Research in Motion (RIM)
RIM was founded by Mike Lazaridis, Co-CEO and President, while a student in Ontario in 1984. He was later joined by Jim Balsillie as Co-CEO in 1992. In the early days, it championed the cause of wireless paging, and then ten years ago unleashed the BlackBerry, a device that changed the face of corporate communication. Throughout the years, BlackBerry devices have become a central communications tool for not only email, but for social networking, SMS, instant messaging, Internet browsing, and of course, for making phone calls. In recent years, RIM has brought innovative new devices to market including the BlackBerry Pearl, the Curve, the Bold and the BlackBerry Storm, which was nominated in the awards earlier tonight.
GSMA Chairman Izosimov said: "In my opinion, the BlackBerry helped keep the mobile data flame alive with email everywhere, and it helped the industry justify investment in GPRS and 3G in the face of early scepticism. It's hard to imagine life – especially in business – before the BlackBerry. Before the revolution of the "push email" service, finding a dial up and accessing email was a painful experience. It's an extraordinary story."
